Final route

Since the colors are exploding around the Highland area and supposed to be peak this weekend the route has, once again, been changed.

We are going to leave at 6 AM Saturday morning and should arrive at Cleveland, Tn. around 3 PM local time. We will exit at Cleveland and take Hwy 74 east along Lake Ocoee and head north on Hwy 3o to Reliance and photograph the old school on the banks of the Hiawassee river. Cross the river on 315 and head north to cut west on the Old Mill rd. Photograph the mill and then head north on 68 to Tellico Plains and then east on the Cherohala skyway and take photos of the cascades on the Tellico river till we head south on River road. Photograph Bald river falls and stay at the Bald river campground.

The second day we will go out the river road till it hits the skyway then take it to Robbinsville and 129 south to 19 and Wayah rd. It will run along side the Nantahala river till we turn on on a forest road to go to Wayah Bald and the oldest ranger station in the forest. We will come back out and continue on till we hit hwy 64 through Franklin and on to Highlands. Passing Callasuja falls, Dry falls and Bridal Veil to camp at Van Hook Glade campground.

The second day we go back into Highlands then go west out 106 to Glenn Falls  back to Highlands to take 64 east to Cashier. Hwy 107 to SC passing Silver run falls then take Wiginton rd east to SC 130 north, it turns into Hwy 281 at the NC border and we will stop at whitewater falls (411 feet) before going back to take 64 east. Cross Toxaway falls then turn north on 215. Passing Living Waters ministry and the 3 falls on their property. Take the forest rd into Courthouse falls then continue on north on 215 crossing many stone bridges and tunnels. We will turn back south on 276 cross the Blue Ridge Parkway Stop at Sliding rock, Moore cove and Looking glass falls before going on to Davidson River campground.

The 3rd day we will go south on 276 then straight on 64, right on Crab creek and into the Dupont State forest for the three falls in the Last of the Mohicans. It is quite a hike and will take most of the day so we then plan to come out south to 276 and the take East Fork Rd to Connestee for the falls right in town. Then back to Davidson river for the night.

4th day we will go north to the Blue Ridge parkway and take it west. Stopping at the many overlooks and especially Devil’s courthouse and the Graveyard Fields. We will stop in Cherokee and visit the museums and the Cherokee village then take the Heintooga rd to the top of Balsam Mountain the back down Big cove road and by Mingo falls and then take 19 east to 276 north and Cove creek rd to Cataloochee to see the old buildings and settlement and the elk. We will stay at the Cataloochee campground.

5th day we will go back to Cataloochee to see the elk and then come back out and north around the east end of the park to Gatlinburg and ride the Roaring Fork motor trial before entering the park on 441. Turning west on Little river rd and taking side trips down Tremont rd before checking in at the Cades Cove Campground. Ride the Cades Cove loop that afternoon and spend the night.

6th day we will go back to Cades Cove early for the deer then take the Parsons Branch rd south to come out on 28 north then take the Foothills parkway by Look Rock and the Greenbrier road by the old school and back to little river rd out to 441 south and check in at Smokemont campground. We will walk the river trail from the campground before going back up 441 to Clingmans Dome for the sunset.

7th day will find us on top of Clingmans dome awaiting the sunrise then back out to 441 and stop at Mingus Mill, Oconuluftee settlement and museum and out to Cherokee where we will go west on 19 to Bryson City and Deep Creek campground. Ride the Fontana Rd(Road to nowhere) go to Fontana dam and photograph the three waterfalls at Deep creek.

8th day  we take 19 west until it turns south and runs along the Nantahala river then take 129 north back to the Cherohala and take it to Joyce Kilmer memorial forest and the campground. We will spend the afternoon hiking and photographing the forest and old cabins.

9th day finds us riding the skyway back to Tellico plains then south on 68 into Ducktown where we take 74 west along the Ocoee river back to Cleveland. Then I 75 back to Chattanooga and stop at the battlefield. I 24 towrads Nashville stopping in Manchester to tour and spend the night at Old Stone fort state park.

10th day finds us on I 24 headed to Murfeesboro to stop at Stone River battlefield before taking 96 west to intersect with the Natchez Trace which we take south making a side trip to Shilo Battlefield and on into the Tombigbee national forest to spend the night.

day 11 we continue on the Trace stopping at Tupelo and Bryce crossroads battlefield and seeing the white buffalo. Then riding on into Jackson, Ms. before taking I 2o and stopping at Vicksburg battlefield for a passport stamp

Of course all this is subject to change LOL

  1. LOL. It has already changed because now we are riding the train. I imagine if we don’t expire from too much fun, we will end up being gone at least 2 weeks. Less than 24 hours til we leave!
