Thursday 10-21-10

We awoke early to be on Clingmans dome for sunrise. I did not take into account the traffic and the time it takes  to negotiate the mountains and curves, Needless to say we did not make it but we found a great overlook with many other photographers. it was very  COLD!!!!!! and the wind was blowing.

I had the stop for a photo of famous “smoke”

We came back down and stopped at Mingus Mill.  Then into Cherokee for gas, back to the campground. We cooked bacon, eggs and grits before breaking camp to drive to clingmans dome. There were turkeys right in the campground.

It took forever to get up there then the parking lot was full. We turned around and headed for the campground at Cades cove. Only to find out it and Elkmont were full. Having enough of the tourist crowd we headed for Cataloochee campground. We came up on three huge bull elk grazing right by  the road. After many photos we headed for the campground only to find it full.

If you go to the park in October expect long lines and crowded campgrounds. Tired, we did not look forward to setting up a tent after dark we found a nice little combo rental cabin, RV park and motel right on a creek just of Hwy 19 just south of Maggie valley. It is quiet, off the road, and very nice.  Microwave, coffee pot, fridge and wifi. If you are in the area look for the Meadowbrook sign. Tell Jodie(the owner) That Rickey from Bayou Photography sent you.
