When IS enough, enough

Posted in General, Rants, Software/Hardware with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on July 6, 2011 by bayouphoto

I was reading a post by Matt Koslowski and it got me to thinking about what is enough, for me. How do I determine when enough is enough? I start the process when taking photos. I usually have a clear idea what I want to achieve. Once I import to Lightroom I then closely check all photos and delete the out of focus, badly under or over exposed, or just technically wrong. Then I start to run the remaining through the develop module. After that it is time to rate the ones I really want to spend time on and to see what must be done, to achieve my goal for that photo. I have used Photoshop, Lightroom and my various plug-ins to now know what each is capable of and which one will best achieve my goal. I tend to use Lightroom and the various plug-ins that work right from it more. My small road trip netbook runs Lightroom way better than Photoshop, so I am limited when on the road.

Then it is just a matter of applying the correct adjustments to the image. Most people will tend to develop a style over time. I tend toward crisp sharp details for my landscape and nature and more of a soft effect for people and portraits.

Here is an example of what I like to achieve with my landscape images.

Nice saturated colors, pure whites and crisp detail in the rocks.

I want to address a misconception I am hearing a lot with the advent of networking and social networking sites. It is the myth that if you post great photos you must have a “really good camera” That is like telling Emeril Lougasi he must have a really good oven, or Michael Angelo had a really good chisel. It is not the tools but how they are used. When I shot competitive 3D  archery I used to tell the young guys, that thought they could win if they just had the latest and greatest bow. ” I can take your bow and beat you but you can’t take my bow and beat me”

Yes I have a decent camera but I work within its limitations and do everything I can to make it the best, BEFORE I post it.

As an example here is the straight out of the camera. And here they are side by side so you can compare better.

The next time you see a great photo think about what probably went into actually creating it.

A follow up to A Hero comes home

Last week I posted about the KIA Marine hero from Ms. The westboro church, from Kansas had threatened to protest. I don’t know how they do things in Kansas but here is how we handle things down south.

Westboro Baptist Church Goes To Mississippi – And Loses

On Saturday USMC Staff Sgt. Jason Rogers, who was killed in action in Afghanistan April 7, was buried in Brandon, Mississippi.
.
That, by itself, is a sadly unremarkable – though certainly noteworthy and solemn – occasion for us to mark.
.
And in fact when Sgt. Rogers’ body returned to Brandon it was greeted by hundreds, or perhaps even thousands, of well-wishers who gathered at the roadside to honor the fallen American hero. The dashboard camera from Mississippi state trooper Elmo Townsend’s cruiser gives an indication of the scene last Thursday.
.
What is most notable about Sgt. Rogers’ funeral in Brandon, however, is what didn’t happen.
.
You see, the troglodytes from Westboro  Church had threatened to spew their poison at Sgt. Rogers’ funeral.
.
But the Westboro mob wasn’t on the scene, and Sgt. Rogers was laid to rest without incident – thank God.
.
Why weren’t there protestors?
.
Planning ahead by the locals, as it turns out.
.
From an Ole Miss sports message board, a tidbit of information…
.
A couple of days before, one of them (Westboro protestors) ran his mouth at a Brandon gas station and got his arse waxed. Police were called and the beaten man could not give much of a description of who beat him. When they canvassed the station and spoke to the large crowd that had gathered around, no one seemed to remember anything about what had happened.
.
Rankin County handled this thing perfectly. There were many things that were put into place that most will never know about and at great expense to the county.
.
Most of the morons never made it out of their hotel parking lot. It seems that certain Rankin county pickup trucks were parked directly behind any car that had Kansas plates in the hotel parking lot and the drivers mysteriously disappeared until after the funeral was over. Police were called but their wrecker service was running behind and it was going to be a few hours before they could tow the trucks so the Kansas plated cars could get out.
.
A few made it to the funeral but were ushered away to be questioned about a crime they might have possibly been involved in. Turns out, after a few hours of questioning, that they were not involved and they were allowed to go on about their business.
.
Fred Phelps, the disbarred lawyer and Democrat activist who leads the Westboro congregation, will undoubtedly pursue some form of legal action for the way his people were thwarted in Brandon. Let him try. There isn’t a jury in Mississippi which will see things his way.
.
This is a template for how to handle the Westboro people. If lawsuits don’t work, other means will. Whatever it takes to keep them from harassing bereaved military families on the day their fallen loved ones are laid to rest.

Camping

Beth and I left yesterday to  drive over to  Lake Bruin state park It is only about 35 miles from  my house and a beautiful place to camp. We usually don’t camp on the weekends but  since it was winter I figured we would be OK. Now, let me explain something, all my life I have been an idiot magnet. No matter how many people are around the idiots will always seek me out. Case in point, we set up camp at the farthertest point in the park. there are dozens of spots to camp in closer to the lake. But where does the idiot stop, you guessed it right across the road. Then he proceeds to come straight across to our fire and make himself at home. I thought I was going to have to ask him to leave. Then I got up this morning and was gathering some branches to re-start the fire and a guy stops gets out of his  truck and proceeds to help me then took it upon himself to show me how to do it properly. This to a guy that has hunted and camped all his life.

I digress and the rant is over. We did get out for some birding and I got  a photo of a red headed woodpecker. I can’t post any now as I left my portable card reader at home.

What is the best camera for me?

Posted in Ramblings, Rants with tags , , , , , on February 21, 2011 by bayouphoto

How many of you have been asked this question or have asked it yourself?

As the local resident “expert” I an asked this question on a daily basis.

Now, before any of you think I am tooting my own horn remember I live in a town with a population of 50 in a very rural  area with not many photographers. As to answering the question I always tell them “The one you have with you when you need it” This tongue and cheek answer is also quite true. A $5,000 camera does you no good if it is not with you when a photo opportunity presents itself.

Case in point, yesterday evening the clouds to the east were showing an alpen glow that we don’t get often. If i had went inside, got the camera, changed lenses and  come back outside the moment would have been gone. I used my Palm Centro phone with it’s 1.3 megapixel camera to at least record the moment. However it does give me a record of the moment. I don’t claim these are very good photos and even for a cell phone they are not up to I Phone standards.I also need to clarify what I put in my last blog, about my phone. I should have said, a “new to me phone.” I am not anti technology I am just anti upgrading just to keep up with the latest and greatest. If it still works and serves the purpose why throw something away just for the newest whiz bang gadget. I drive a 1995 Mazda, use and old Canon 20D and used lenses. My cell phone is a 3 year old Palm. I still use knives and guns that are at least 20 years old. I have a zippo lighter that I bought in 1976. OK OK enough of the ranting and rambling. The next time someone wants to know what camera is best you know the answer

Cell phones

I got a new cell phone today. It has more bells and whistles than I will ever use. The owners manual is pages long. I had to read half the book just to find out how to make a call. It was more about texting, using the web and the keyboard than making and receiving calls.

I remember when the big dinosaur bag(car) phones came out. You hand a regular handset and a touch tone pad just like at home. All it did was make and receive calls. Now phones are mini computers and there is no such thing a “Just” a phone.

Sometimes I think progressive technology is not helping us at all. Before cell phones if you couldn’t get them on a home phone, you drove around and found them. it got us out of the house a lot more. We also saw each other face to face instead of characters on a screen.

I do have one anti technology friend that doesn’t have a computer, cell phone or even a house phone. He did just get satellite TV so he could watch the Outdoor Channel. Up until just a few years ago he drove a 30 year old truck and a 20 year old motorcycle. He did upgrade to a 15 year old truck and a 10 year old motorcycle. He goes to work, goes hunting and fishing doesn’t have high cooling bills(no AC) uses wood heat. If he wants to see someone he gets on his bike and rides around till he finds them. He sure is behind the times, wait a minute maybe he is on to something. Maybe we should unplug and unwind, just slow down. Dang it that new phone is ringing.

American by birth

Posted in Rants with tags on December 4, 2010 by bayouphoto

I Am the Democratic Liberal-Progressive’s Worst Nightmare.
I am a White, Conservative, American Veteran,  and Gun Owner.
I worked hard and long hours with my hands to earn a living.

I believe in God and the freedom of religion, but I don’t push it on others
I believe in American products and buy them whenever I can.

I believe the money I make belongs to me and not some liberal            governmental functionary,Democratic or Republican, that wants to            share it with others who don’t work!

I’m in touch with my feelings and I like it that way!

I think owning a gun doesn’t make you a killer; it makes you a smart American.

I think being a minority does not make you noble or victimized, and            does not entitle you to anything. Get over it!

I believe that if you are selling me a Big Mac or any other item, you should do it in English.

I believe there should be no other language option.

I believe everyone has a right to pray to his or her God when and where they want to.

My heroes are John Wayne, Drew Brees, Charlton Heston, Tom Selleck            Roy Rogers, and Willie G. Davidson, who makes the awesome Harley Davidson Motorcycles.

I don’t hate the rich. I don’t pity the poor.

I’ve never owned a slave, nor was I a slave. I haven’t burned any witches or been persecuted by the Turks, and neither have you!

I believe if you don’t like the way things are here, go back to where you came from and change your own country!

This is AMERICA …We like it the way it is and more so the way it was ….so stop trying to change it to look like Russia or China , or some other socialist country!

If you were born here and don’t like it… you are free to move to any Socialist country that will have you.   I believe it is time to really clean house, starting with the White House, the seat of our biggest problems.

We are Americans not african or asian or mexican just Americans one and all

I want to know which church is it, exactly, where the Reverend Jesse Jackson preaches, where he gets his money, and why he is always part of the problem and not the solution?

Can I get an AMEN on that one?

I also think the cops have the right to pull you over if you’re breaking the law, regardless of what color you are.

And, no, I don’t mind having my face shown on my driver’s license. I think it’s good….  And I’m proud that ‘God’  is written on my money..

I think if you are too stupid to know how a ballot works, I don’t want you deciding who should be running the most powerful nation in the world for the next four years.

I dislike those people standing in the intersections trying to sell me stuff or trying to guilt me into making ‘donations’ to their cause…..  Get a job and do your part to support yourself and your family!

I believe that it doesn’t take a village to raise a child, it takes two parents…. and not of the same-sex.

I believe ‘illegal’ is illegal no matter what the lawyers  think!

I believe the American flag should be the only one allowed in AMERICA !

If this makes me a BAD American, then yes, I’m a BAD American.

We want our country back!
My Country…..
I hope this offends all illegal aliens.

Texas high school students raised a Mexican flag on a school flag   pole, other students took it down. Guess who was expelled…the students who took it down.

California  high school students were sent home on Cinco de Mayo, because they wore T-shirts with the American flag printed on them.

Enough is enough

This message needs to be viewed by every American; and every            American needs to stand up for America .

We’ve bent over to appease the America-haters long enough. I’m taking            a stand.

I’m standing up because the hundreds of thousands who died fighting in wars for this country, and for the American flag.

And shame on anyone who tries to make this a racist message.

AMERICANS, stop giving away Your RIGHTS !

Let me make this clear! THIS IS MY COUNTRY !

This statement DOES NOT mean I’m against immigration !

YOU ARE WELCOME HERE, IN MY COUNTRY, welcome to come legally:

1. Get  a sponsor !

2. Learn the LANGUAGE, as immigrants have in the past !

3. Live by OUR rules !

4. Get a job !

5. Pay YOUR Taxes !

6. No Social Security until you have earned it and Paid for it            !

7. NOW find a place to lay your head !

If you don’t want to forward this for fear of offending someone, then YOU’RE  PART OF THE PROBLEM !

We’ve gone so far the other way . . .  bent over backwards not to offend anyone.

Only AMERICANS seems to care when American Citizens are being            offended !

WAKE UP America ! ! !

Made in the U S A & DAMN PROUD OF IT!!!!!

Where were you…

Posted in Rants with tags , , on September 11, 2010 by bayouphoto

early on the morning of 9/11. take a moment to relive that dark time, remember where, and how you got the terrible news.

At the time I was maintenance supervisor for a large nursing home. I was walking down one hall when a nurses aid called me into a room to see the news. They were showing the first plane to hit and I thought this is a horrible accident, when the second plane struck I knew our world had changed forever. It was a s if the Kamakazi’s had returned. There was crying and screaming. The phone lines were jammed. Schools were closed and prayers offered up. The tiny chapel was full all day.

Later that day the awful full impact was revealed, our nation had been the victim of a callous sneak attack once again. This time by a cowardly religious sect that preaches violence and death to outsiders and rewards cowardly acts.

Oh I am sure our big eared leader will take this chance to tell America it was our fault and we “Provoked” his beloved islamic world. I would like to provoke then further. Notice how they cry and scream to the media when a Predator drone strikes their home. Now you know how we feel.

I will never ever forget the place I was that morning. I can close my eyes and picture it just as if it happened this morning.
